San Leandro, Alameda County
San Leandro was once known for cherries and for tractors. A local firm built steam and gasoline tractors here beginning in the 1880s and later merged into Caterpillar, which kept a factory in town until the 1980s. Orchards covered the rest of the plain, and the city has held a Cherry Festival, on and off, since 1909.
